On Saturday, January 25, 2025, the first group of workers from Timor-Leste arrived in Brunei Darussalam, marking the operational commencement of the newly established labour migration corridor between the two nations. This initiative, conceptualised, developed, designed, and implemented by the Timorese Manpower Agency (TMA) in collaboration with the governments of Brunei and Timor-Leste, represents a significant milestone in bilateral relations and labour mobility. The corridor aims to facilitate the movement of skilled and semi-skilled workers, enhancing economic ties and addressing labour market needs in Brunei.
The development of the labour migration corridor began in June 2022, following extensive negotiations and planning between the involved parties. The primary objective of this corridor is to create a structured and sustainable pathway for Timorese workers to gain employment in Brunei, thereby contributing to the economic development of both countries. This initiative also seeks to provide Timorese workers with valuable skills and experience, which they can bring back to their home country, fostering economic growth and development.
The arrival of the first cohort of workers is a testament to the successful implementation of this corridor. These workers, selected through a rigorous process by the TMA, will be employed in various sectors in Brunei, including construction, hospitality, and healthcare. This event signifies a new chapter in the bilateral relationship between Timor-Leste and Brunei, highlighting the mutual benefits of such collaborations. For Brunei, it addresses the demand for skilled labour, while for Timor-Leste, it provides employment opportunities and skill development for its citizens.
Dr. Nasir Latif, CEO of the Timorese Manpower Agency, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "The launch of this labour migration corridor is a significant achievement for both Timor-Leste and Brunei. It not only strengthens our bilateral ties but also provides our workforce with invaluable opportunities to enhance their skills and contribute to the economic prosperity of both nations."
His Excellency Abel Gutteres, the Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Brunei Darussalam, remarked, "This initiative is a testament to the strong partnership between our countries. It reflects our shared commitment to fostering economic growth and improving the livelihoods of our people. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this corridor will have on our economies and societies."
The labour migration corridor is expected to have a profound impact on the economies of both Timor-Leste and Brunei. For Timor-Leste, it offers a solution to unemployment and underemployment, while for Brunei, it provides a steady supply of skilled labour to support its growing industries. Plans are already underway to expand the corridor, with discussions focusing on increasing the number of workers and diversifying the sectors involved. This expansion will further solidify the economic partnership between the two nations and create more opportunities for collaboration.
In conclusion, the establishment of the labour migration corridor between Timor-Leste and Brunei Darussalam is a landmark achievement that underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing labour market challenges. This initiative not only benefits the economies of both countries but also strengthens their diplomatic ties. As we look to the future, we remain committed to building on this success and exploring new avenues for collaboration that will enhance the prosperity and well-being of our people.
